Do I REALLY need snow tires?

Michelin has provided some great tips for driving on snow

Are snow tires really necessary? We went over snow tires in our Winter Is Coming article but in case you missed it let’s talk a little about the subject.

The answer to this question all depends on where you drive. If you drive somewhere where you will frequently encounter snowy/icy roads then YES you should equip your vehicle with snow tires. Why? Because snow tires decreases stopping distance and helps with the over all traction because they “grip” the road better.

How do they grip better?

Snow tires are made of different rubber which is softer. They also have specific tread patterns that give the tires more “bite” and dig into the snow a lot better.

I have an older car that is only 2WD so I only need 2 snow tires…right?

If only it were that easy. You should never put just 2 snow tires on your vehicle. Only putting 2 snow tires on will, essentially, make 2 tires stronger than the others. This would make your car much more likely to spin out. So even if your vehicle isn’t 4WD or AWD 4 is really the only way to go. If you have a 4WD or AWD vehicle you DEFINITELY need 4 of the same snow tires(and summer tires too).
